How this is calculated

Weeks 1–6 pay 90% of your average weekly earnings with no cap. Weeks 7–39 pay the 2026/27 flat rate of £194.32 a week, or 90% of your average weekly earnings if that is lower. The schedule always totals exactly 39 weeks; Statutory Maternity Leave is 52 weeks, so the final 13 weeks are unpaid. You qualify with 26 weeks' continuous service and average weekly earnings of at least £129 (the 2026/27 Lower Earnings Limit). Figures use the 2026/27 rates, last checked against GOV.UK on 5 November 2026. See the full method on How we calculate.

Example — average weekly earnings £500

7–39 at the £194.32 flat rate£194.32£6,412.56
Total — 39 weeks£9,112.56

On lower earnings the second stretch falls too: at £200 a week average earnings, weeks 7–39 pay 90% — £180.00 a week — for a 39-week total of £7,020.00.

Questions

How much Statutory Maternity Pay will I get?

For the first 6 weeks you get 90% of your average weekly earnings, with no cap. For the next 33 weeks you get £194.32 a week, or 90% of your average weekly earnings if that is lower. Pay covers 39 weeks; Statutory Maternity Leave itself is 52 weeks, so the last 13 weeks are unpaid unless your employer tops it up.

Do I qualify for SMP?

You need 26 weeks' continuous employment with the same employer into the 15th week before your baby is due (the qualifying week), and average weekly earnings of at least £129 a week in the 8 weeks before that qualifying week. If you do not qualify, you may be able to claim Maternity Allowance instead.

What counts as average weekly earnings?

Your average gross weekly pay over the 8 weeks ending with the 15th week before your expected week of childbirth — including overtime, commission and bonuses paid in that period. Enter that weekly figure above and the schedule is worked out from it.

Is SMP taxed?

Yes — SMP is taxable income and counts towards your personal allowance, and National Insurance is deducted from it like normal pay. The figures above are gross; your employer deducts tax and National Insurance through payroll.
