How this is calculated

Gross overtime = your hourly rate × hours × multiplier. The net figure applies your marginal deduction rate — your marginal income-tax rate plus National Insurance (8% below £50,270, 2% above) plus any student loan — to that gross. Pension is left out because overtime is usually not pensionable. Your marginal rate comes from the same engine as the take-home pay calculator; the rates are on the 2026/27 rates page.

Examples — overtime on a £35,000 salary

Hourly rate £17.95 (from £35,000 at 37.5 hours a week), marginal rate 28% (20% tax + 8% NI), no student loan.

Questions

How much is overtime worth after tax?

Less than the headline rate. On a £35,000 salary your marginal deduction rate is 28% (20% income tax + 8% National Insurance), so 10 hours at time-and-a-half on a £17.95 hourly rate pays £269.25 gross but £193.86 after tax and NI. The calculator above works it out for your salary and multiplier.

Is overtime taxed at a higher rate?

No — overtime is taxed at your marginal rate, the same rate as your next pound of ordinary pay. It only feels higher because a big overtime month can push that month's PAYE into the 40% band temporarily, even if your yearly pay stays basic-rate. The annual figure is what counts.

Do I pay pension on overtime?

Usually not — most schemes take pension only on basic pay, so this calculator leaves pension out of the overtime deduction. If your employer does deduct pension on overtime, your net will be a little lower; check your scheme rules or your payslip.

What is time-and-a-half on £20 an hour?

£30 an hour. Ten hours at time-and-a-half is £300 gross. After 28% marginal deductions (basic-rate taxpayer) that is £216.00 in your pocket.

Is my pay sent anywhere?

No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser. No figure you enter is sent to a server, stored, or shared.
